Have you ever jumped into a multiplayer match only to be completely obliterated within seconds by someone who plays religiously, every single day? Finding the right competitive balance is one of the hottest debated topics in online gaming right now. Now, FromSoftware is officially joining the skill-based matchmaking discussion with The Duskbloods.
When it comes to pairing players together, the studio isn't leaving things purely to chance. The developers have confirmed, "We plan for the matchmaking system to work in a ranked manner," giving a clear direction for the game's competitive environment.
Skill-based matchmaking, often called SBMM, continuously divides the competitive community. On one hand, it pairs players with equally skilled opponents, keeping matches fair, intense, and competitive. On the other hand, some players worry that a strict system can make casual play feel too demanding. By promising a ranked matchmaking framework, FromSoftware appears to be setting things up so that players are tested against opponents that actually match their ability, rather than leaving their fate entirely to random lobbies.
However, a rigid competitive ladder isn't the only element being explored in the game's online ecosystem. Game director Hidetaka Miyazaki also said, "We're considering ways to build relationships between veteran players and newcomer players."
Bridging the gap between seasoned experts and complete beginners is a difficult puzzle to solve in the multiplayer space. If high-level players are strictly confined to top-tier ranked ladders, new players often miss out on actually seeing higher-level play. Conversely, throwing beginners into the deep end without a safety net brings frustration. Finding a clever way to foster positive connections and interactions between battle-hardened veterans and newly joined players could offer a fascinating dynamic for the community.
Matchmaking systems can make or break an online game, especially when competitive ranking is at the forefront. Striking the right balance between fair competitive matchmaking and supportive community structures is tricky, but FromSoftware is clearly thinking hard about both sides of the player experience.
What do you think about the ranked matchmaking planned for The Duskbloods? Do you prefer strict skill ratings, or would you like to see how veterans and new players might interact? Let us know your thoughts!
