Remember the Riot Shield? The piece of equipment that could turn you into an unkillable turtle and frustrate everyone? Well, it's coming back in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, and it has undergone some truly major changes. The beta has launched, and we're already seeing some big changes to this infamous tool.
First off, the Riot Shield is no longer a weapon. Instead, it's now a field upgrade. That means you don't have to sacrifice your primary or secondary to carry it. It's an extra kit you can call in during a match. And that's not the only change.
The new shield is destructible. In the past, it absorbed bullets like a sponge, allowing for some pretty ambitious gameplay. Now it's durable enough to support a push or cover a retreat, but it will eventually break. According to Activision, this should encourage strategic use rather than just holding it forever.
But there's more. You can now place the shield on the ground to create your own portable cover anywhere on the map. Once placed, you can mount your weapon on it for increased stability. This is great for holding positions or locking down objectives in modes like Domination or Hardpoint.
On the offensive side, this shield also includes a new powerful melee attack that knocks enemies down, letting you carve out a little space up close. So it's no longer just a defensive tool. It can be used to push advantages and create opportunities.
These changes are a direct response to the love-hate relationship players had with the old shield. Some loved the protection it offered, while others hated how it could bring the game to a halt. Infinity Ward is trying to balance it by making it destructible and turning it into a field upgrade.
The MW4 beta is currently only available to those who pre-ordered, but the open beta runs from August 28 to September 1, so you don't need to pre-order. The beta includes multiplayer, a campaign mission called 'Entrenched,' and a sneak peek at the future of Warzone.
MW4 launches on October 23 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Switch 2. It's the first Call of Duty to release on a Nintendo platform since Ghosts in 2013. So, will you be picking up MW4? Are you excited to try out the new Riot Shield, or are you still having nightmares? Let us know in the comments!
