Remember Golden Axe? No? Well, that's fine. Either way, this new animated series might just win you over. Sega's classic fighting franchise has been dormant for over a decade, but the first trailer for the Golden Axe animated series has just dropped, and it's packed with adventure, blood, and thieves gathering ingredients to brew potions. Even if you never grew up with the games, this trailer does a great job of showing how the franchise has been revived for TV.
The show brings back the original heroic trio: Tyris Flare, Axe Battler, and Gilius Thunderhead, voiced by Lisa Gilroy, Liam McIntyre, and Matthew Rhys respectively. They're setting off on a journey to defeat the evil Death Adder once again and save the land of Yuria. This time, they're joined by Hampton, an inexperienced and ill-prepared adventurer. A squib who dreams far beyond his abilities. Think of him as the comic relief who's in way over his head.
The series is created by Mike McMahan (Star Trek: Lower Decks) and Joe Chandler (American Dad), so you can expect a mix of faithful adaptation and meta commentary. The trailer hints at this when Tyris Flare jokes about facing "a series of increasingly stronger enemies" before her final showdown with Death Adder. That's self-aware humor right there, and it's what makes the trailer feel so appealing even to newcomers.
Sega has been focusing heavily on bringing its game properties to the screen lately. We've got the entire Sonic movie trilogy (with a fourth in the works), the live-action Yakuza series that debuted in 2024, and the upcoming Streets of Rage, House of the Dead, and even a Michael Bay-directed OutRun movie (why not?). Golden Axe is the next test in this wave of game-to-screen adaptations.
So even if you've never touched a Golden Axe arcade cabinet, this trailer is worth a watch. It's got action, humor, and a fresh take on a classic franchise. Will you check it out when it premieres? Let us know what you think!
